Why Spin Classes Cause Acne

We all love a good spin class for so many reasons beyond a kickass playlist -- it burns calories, builds muscle, relieves stress, and SO much more.  But, a phenomenal spin class also promises lots of sweat, and sweat clogs your pores.  After getting your workout on, the bacteria within your sweat mixes with the oil and dead skin cells on your face which can cause your skin to freak out + break out.  If you've experienced acne along your hairline, the culprit is probably your workout routine.

All forms of workout are awesome and we're total advocates for keeping fitness in your life!  So, now what? Luckily, we’ve put together a list of ways to help you combat workout acne:

Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse!

Cleanse before AND after your fitness class to remove makeup pre-workout, and to remove the sweat from your face post-workout.  Your pores open up when you workout so you don’t want to block your skin’s breathability.

Exfoliate, gently.

Exercise dehydrates the skin, so you want to use a gentle exfoliator after you cleanse to remove dead skin cells that trap and cause acne.  A gentle exfoliator is the way to go here so that you don’t accidentally over-exfoliate.

Tone it up.

If there’s one thing you don’t want to skimp on after class, it's a toner.  Keep a toner in your gym bag and spritz a few sprays on your face right after class to prevent workout acne.  Most toners contain witch hazel, which is a natural astringent meaning it will help kill bacteria that sweat leaves behind.  Not only that, but toners are hydrating and soothing, help shrink pores, and even out the skin tone.
